ALEC was the largest of the six economic cities planned by the Government of Saudi Arabia towards the development of the country. It is located in the Eastern Province, at the Empty Quarter, between Qatar and the United Arab Emirates. The total initial area is 170,000 km2, to be expanded. It includes a fully featured city plus a passenger and commercial port, an industrial port and heavy petroleum industry, aluminum smelting, and the production of fertilizers.
